Archpriest Ioann Lapidus, Rector of the Parish of St. Sergius of Radonezh from 2004 to 2009
Archpriest Ioann Lapidus was born in 1973 in the city of Riga in the Republic of Latvia where he finished secondary school in 1990.
In 1991, enrolled at the Moscow Theological Seminary, which he completed in 1995 in the top category.
From 1995 to 1999, he studied at the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1999 he was awarded a Masters Degree in Theology for successfully completing a thesis on the History of the Early Church with the theme: “Saint Sophronius, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, and his struggle against the monophyletic heresy”.
In 1999 he was ordained as a deacon in the Academic Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin by the Rector of Moscow Theological Academy Archbishop of Verea Eugene.
From 1998 to 2003, he taught Modern Greek Language, Essential and Comparative Theology at the Orthodox Classical Gymnasium “Hovrino” in Moscow.
From 1999 to 2000, he served as a deacon in the Church of Christ the Saviour and in the Church of the Saint Martyrs Adrian and Natalie.
In 1999 he started post-graduate studies in the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, finished in 2001.
In 2000 he was ordained as a priest at Archangel Michael’s chapel by His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and of all Russia Alexy II.
From 2000 to 2004, he served as a priest in St. Tatiana’s Church at the Moscow State University, and from 2001 to 2003, taught Early Church History at the Russian Orthodox University of St. John the Theologian.
In 2002 he became a staff member of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations in the inter-Christian relations section, specialising in relations with the Roman Catholic Church. In his secretarial capacity, he took an active role in the workings of numerous Orthodox-Catholic relation conferences, seminars and work groups.
In 2004, he was honoured with a kamelaukion.
In 2004, following the resolution of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and of all Russia Alexy II, father Ioann was appointed as the Rector of the church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, South Africa.
On 5th of November 2008, following the resolution of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and of all Russia Alexy II, father Ioann was honoured with a rank of archpriest.
Married, having three children.
