Hegumen Philaret (Bulekov), Rector of the Parish of St. Sergius of Radonezh from 2000 to 2004
Hiegumen Philaret (Bulekov Alexander Vladimirovich) was born in Moscow in 1967 where he finished secondary school in 1984.
From 1984 – 1990, he studied physics at the Moscow State University.
In 1991, he joined the Moscow Theological Seminary after which he successfully completed the Moscow Theological Academy in 1998.
In 1999 he was awarded a Masters Degree in Theology for successfully completing a thesis: “History and the modern state of the Maronite Church”.
From 1988 to 1991, he worked in the Moscow Patriarchate Publishing Department and from 1991 to 1993, was a staff member of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations in the inter-Christian relations section.
He was a director of the Communication Service at the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations from 1993 to 1996.
In 1996 he was ordained as a deacon and was honoured with the Order of St. Daniel of Moscow.
From 1997 to 1999, he served as Secretary of the Moscow Patriarchate Representation to the Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East.
In 2000, he was ordained as a priest and tonsured with the name of Philaret in honour of St. Philaret the Metropolitan of Moscow.
From 2000 to 2004, he held the post of Rector of the Russian Orthodox Parish of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, South Africa.
In 2002, he was elevated to the rank of Hiegumen.
Following the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church during late 2004, father Philaret assumed his new post as a Representative of the Russian Orthodox Church at the European Council as well as Rector of the Church of All Saints in the city of Strasbourg, France.
