On 28 July 2025, on the day of commemoration of the Great Prince Vladimir and the Day of the Baptism of Russia, Archpriest Daniel Lugovoy, rector of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, celebrated the Divine Liturgy with Deacon Stephen Hayes, clergyman of the parish.
At the end of the liturgy in the chapel in the name of the Holy Prince Vladimir the Equal-to-the-Apostles, a thanksgiving prayer was offered to the Lord God "for all the favours that have been done in Russia from the ancient times to the present day".
Of particular significance to this celebration is the fact that the first Russian Orthodox parish in the south of the African continent was opened in honour of Saint Vladimir in 1952. For more than seven decades, the spiritual children of the Russian Orthodox Church have been bearing witness to Christ here, drawing inspiration from the exploits of the Baptist of Russia.
At 12:00 local time, the parish joined the Church-wide action of the festive chime. This tradition began in 2012, when a single chime united Orthodox parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church in many countries for the first time, testifying to the community of faith and the living memory of the single baptismal font of Holy Russia.
The rector of the parish congratulated all those gathered on this great feast and urged them to imitate St Prince Vladimir, to live their faith with determination and courage, not to be afraid to be Christians in the rapidly changing modern circumstances and to strive to maintain unity in Christ.
