From 5 to 30 November 2025, the parish centre of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Midrand hosted full-time Russian language courses for children and adults. For almost a month, parishioners and guests of our cathedral met regularly at the parish centre.
The classes were held within the framework of the programme «Methodological support for the introduction of Russian into the curriculum as a foreign language» with the support of leading Russian universities - Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) and Tyumen State University (TyumSU).
The intensive programme included not only Russian language lessons, but also a series of educational and cultural events: creative master classes, presentations, thematic games and activities dedicated to the history, literature, customs and holidays of Russia. Thanks to this format, the participants were able not only to learn new language skills, but also to feel a living connection with Russian culture.
Experienced teachers with specialised training used modern methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language, combining a communicative approach, game technologies, work with texts, audio materials and speaking practice.
The project was aimed at people of different ages and language levels - from those who were just starting to get acquainted with Russian to advanced learners. According to the participants' feedback, the courses became not only useful language practice, but also an important space for communication, support and strengthening ties within the Russian-speaking community.
This educational project was another step in developing cultural and educational ties between Russia and South Africa, as well as in supporting the Russian-speaking diaspora. The courses helped children and adults to strengthen their connection with their native language, and those who are just discovering the Russian tradition to touch its spiritual and cultural richness in the friendly and family atmosphere of the parish centre.
The parish of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh expresses its gratitude to the teachers of PFUR and TyumSU, to all the participants and organisers of the courses and hopes to continue this cooperation and conduct new educational programmes in the future.
