On Sunday 19 October, after the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh, an exciting activity for Sunday school students - a master class on candle making - took place. It was conducted by Victor, a parishioner of our church, who shared his experience and told the children about the ancient church craft.
Under Victor's guidance, the children from the younger and older Sunday school groups participated step-by-step in all stages of candle making. The children carefully placed the wicks in the candle moulds; oiled the moulds; watched the wax sink and soften on the cooker; the older students helped pour the melted wax into the moulds.
While the wax was cooling, small wax hearts were made for the children as a memento of the masterclass, which each child took home with them.
Matushka Elena told the children about the spiritual significance and practical use of the church candle in the life of an Orthodox Christian.
The children saw with their own eyes how a candle is born from simple wax - the same candle that burns in our church in front of the icons and accompanies every prayer.
When the candles had cooled down completely, the children, together with Victor, opened the moulds and took out the finished candles. Everyone felt like a real master and helper of the Church.
Thank you to Victor and Mother Helena for this inspiring masterclass.
