On Saturday, 31 May 2025, the anniversary of the end of the Anglo-Boer War, commemorative events were held in the chapel in the name of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Prince Vladimir, erected on the grounds of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in memory of the Russians who died in that armed conflict.
On this day, the Afrikaners, who still retain the grateful memory of the support provided by Russian volunteers, doctors and sisters of mercy during the difficult years of the war, expressed their wish to honour their memory by laying wreaths in the Russian church.
The rector of the parish, Archpriest Daniel Lugovoi, celebrated a requiem litany for the dead and chanted "Eternal Memory" to all the Orthodox soldiers who gave their lives in the land of South Africa.
Parishioners and guests of the church laid flowers at the memorial plaque with the names of Russian volunteers who died during the war.
At the request of the audience, Archpriest Daniel also gave a talk on the history of the Cathedral of St Sergius of Radonezh, spoke about the emergence of the Russian parish in Johannesburg, Orthodox worship and church traditions, and answered numerous questions.
