On September 27, 2026, during the 17th Sunday of Pentecost, at the cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg (South Africa), one of the two-hundredth celebrations was celebrated – the Exaltation of the Holy and Life-Giving Cross of Christ.
The festive service began with morning prayer, during which the Holy Cross was solemnly brought to the center of the church for worship by the faithful.
Then the Divine Liturgy was celebrated, led by the cathedral priest, the vicar of the parishes in South Africa, Rev. Daniel Lugovoy.
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is dedicated to commemorating the acquisition of the Cross on which the Savior was crucified. By venerating the Living Cross, the Church glorifies the victory of Christ over sin and death, reminding believers of God’s sacrificial love and the calling of every Christian to follow the Lord, carrying their own life-giving cross.
