On Saturday 6 January, Christmas Eve, at the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated in conjunction with Vespers, during which the Old Testament paremi were read, foretelling the miracle of the birth of the Saviour from the Virgin Mary.
With the singing of the Troparion and Kondak of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, a candle was taken out of the altar, a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem, which appeared at the time of the birth of the Christ Child.
After the service, the parishioners decorated the church with flowers and made a creche - a shade of fir branches over the festive icon of the Nativity of Christ.
