In December of this year the restoration of one of the icons of our temple, the icon of the Holy Trinity, was carried out.
In the mind of an Orthodox Christian, St Sergius of Radonezh is inextricably linked with the veneration of the Holy Trinity, so this relic, which appeared in our church not so long ago, has become very significant for the parish of St Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg. Over the long period of its existence, it has darkened, there are losses and damage to the colour layer.
Pavel Erofeev, a restorer of the State Tretyakov Gallery, arrived in South Africa to carry out the necessary restoration work. The icon was cleaned of darkened varnish, tinting was done in places of lost fragments, and the colour layer was strengthened. The gilded frame was cleaned of oxides. As a result, the icon was restored to its original splendour.
On Sunday 10 December a talk was held in the parish centre. Pavel Erofeev told the parishioners about the main stages of restoration and the artistic features of this icon. Archpriest Andrei Rumyantsev continued the talk, explained to the gathered parishioners the symbolism of the icon of the Holy Trinity, spoke about the iconography of this image and the general development of iconography in the Orthodox Church. The speakers answered numerous questions.
All this became possible thanks to the sacrificial help of our parishioners. Many thanks to all those involved in the realisation of this wonderful work!
