On 6 March 2026, the rector of the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg, Archpriest Daniel Lugovoi, dean of parishes of the Diocese of South Africa in South Africa, at the invitation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Serbia to the Republic of South Africa, Sasha Mart, took part in a reception on the occasion of the Statehood Day of the Republic of Serbia.
The festive event was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, the Serbian diaspora and the South African public.
The Serbian and Russian communities in South Africa have a long history of good relations. They have common spiritual and ecclesiastical roots: in the mid-twentieth century, Serbs and Russians formed a single Orthodox community here. Later, each community established its own parishes and churches, but the fraternal ties that were formed then remain in place to this day.
