On October 5-6, 2024, the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg held celebrations in honor of its patronal feast. According to longstanding tradition, the commemoration of St. Sergius of Radonezh was moved from October 8 to the nearest Sunday to allow as many parishioners as possible to join in prayer and share in the joy of the feast.
The festive service was led by the Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, Metropolitan Konstantin of Zaraisk. On the evening before, the Exarch conducted an all-night vigil at St. Sergius Cathedral.
During the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence was concelebrated by the Dean of the South African Diocese in the Republic of South Africa, Rector of the Cathedral of St. Sergius, Archpriest Daniil Lugovoy, and the diocesan cleric, Priest Jacques Smuts.
The service was conducted in Church Slavonic, Afrikaans and English.
After the dismissal of the Liturgy, a moleben and a procession took place.
Metropolitan Constantine then read out the decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia on granting the Church of St Sergius the status of cathedral of the South African Diocese of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa. This decision was an important event in the history of the parish, highlighting its importance as an administrative centre, as well as its role in the spiritual life of the region.
Our active parishioner and benefactor Victor Zelenyuk was presented with a blessed letter of commemoration on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Metropolitan Konstantin congratulated the parish Chancellor Sergey Vybornov on his Name Day and presented him with a liturgical prosphora.
Concluding the service, Metropolitan Constantine addressed the audience with a warm word of greeting, congratulated the rector and parishioners on the Parish Feast and the joyful event.
In response, the Rector of the Cathedral, Archpriest Daniil Lugovoy, addressed the Exarch with words of gratitude.
Afterwards, everyone gathered for a festive meal, during which a photo exhibition about the life of the parish was opened.
