On 24 May, on the day of commemoration of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the enlighteners of the Slavs and creators of the Slavonic script, and also on the day of the namesake of His Holiness Patriarch Cyril of Moscow and All Russia, a solemn Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the Cathedral of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Johannesburg by Archpriest Daniel Lugovoi, the rector of the church. At the end of the service, the worshipers sang "Long live" to His Holiness the Patriarch, who in 2003 consecrated this church, which has now become a cathedral.
On this festive day, dedicated to the Day of Slavonic Script and Culture, in the parish centre with the assistance of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in South Africa opened an exhibition "Russian ABC in drawings by Marina Hankova".
The exposition is an author's interpretation of the letters of the Russian alphabet - each image reveals the imagery and cultural depth of a particular sound, intertwining the traditions of Orthodox culture and folk art. The artist's works not only familiarise the viewer with the Russian alphabet, but also become a guide to the world of historical memory, spiritual values and national identity.
The exhibition will be of interest both to children making their first steps in getting acquainted with Russian writing, and to adults, for whom these images will become an occasion for reflection on roots, language and faith. "Alphabet" in the artistic performance of Marina Hankova is not just illustrations, but images in which the letters come to life and the living thread of Russian speech sounds.
Next week the exhibition will be posted in its entirety. And on Sunday, June 1, after the service, we invite everyone to the parish centre for a meeting where we will talk more about the exhibition, its meanings and symbols.
